Hollywood stars unite to help Haiti's earthquake victims

Haiti's destructive earthquake has moved many Hollywood and pop music stars to lead a rally for disaster relief donations and contribute for the cause.
Actors Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were the first one to provide relief to the affected people by donating $1 million from their foundation to Doctors Without Borders, which has been taking care of the victims of the quake that demolished buildings in Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince early this week. As per the estimations, tens of thousands are expected to be dead.
Actress Alyssa Milano, brand-ambassador for UNICEF, has challenged U.S. corporations to match her donation via her blog on The Huffington Post. She said that the funds would go to provide medical supplies, tarpaulins, food and water kits for the victims.
"I cried and then I did the only thing I could do ... I wrote a check to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF for $50,000," she wrote on her blog.
Haiti-born hip-hop musician, Wyclef Jean launched a texting campaign, telling his fans to donate $5 to his Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund by texting "Yele" to 501501.
Apart from this, Jean has already raised fund of more than $1 million for the disaster relief effort and is in Haiti "giving aid and assessing the situation," according to reports by his www.yele.org website.
Actor George Clooney will host a telethon on MTV by next week to raise funds for victims of devastating earthquake.
The event will telecast on all MTV Network channels on January 22. Clooney is expected to be joined by many unnamed pop music and movie stars.
Coldplay musician, Chris Martin raised donations through Oxfam, whose global ambassador, actress Scarlett Johansson, has also appealed for contributions for Haiti's victims.
Oprah Winfrey got involved on by asking viewers of her popular show, “The Oprah Winfrey Show”, to donate for the victims through the Red Cross.
Grammy-winning pop singer, Shakira asked her fans for donations to help rebuild Haiti through UNICEF and Wyclef Jean's foundation.
Not to forget, actor Ben Stiller, who has been raising money for a school in Ceverine in Haiti through 'Save the Children', also made an appeal to the viewers on CNN's "Larry King Live" for $10 donations by texting "Haiti" to 90999.
Michelle Obama also made a public appeal for this texting campaign, which has raised more than $5.9 million dollars for the Red Cross till now.
Cycling legend Lance Armstrong's LiveStrong Foundation has pledged $250,000 to help Haiti's recovery, according to the reports on its official website.
